Spam Musabi

For anyone who has watched the movie ‘Fifty First Dates’ with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, you will recall that Spam was used in many meals at the little diner where the movie was filmed. Spam? really? For some reason, Hawaiians have a little love affair going on with the meat product that dates back to World War II. Rationing created just the right conditions for the rise of meat that didn’t need refrigeration and had a long shelf life. After the war, Spam remained a staple and sometime in the 70s, someone created the Spam Musabi. It is a fried slice of Spam with sticky rice and wrapped in seaweed. Think sushi without the fish.
We all tried the Spam Musabi and gave it a Heath family rating 4 out of 6 stars. (4 for Kendall, Jacob, Viktoria and Rebecca. Clint didn’t like it and Nathan refused to try it after he smelled it). It was Viktoria who, after her first try, began asking for one every morning. Funny thing is, they are sold everywhere and are relatively cheap. We were hooked, at least some of us were.
Spam seems to be sold just about everywhere. 7Eleven, McDonalds, Pizza Hut. It seems that spam goes with just about anything and is substituted for ground beef in popular dishes here on the islands. You can get it w mac and cheese, on eggs, in a salad. There truly is no limit....but I think we will stick with the Spam Musabis for now.
