Thanks to our friend Yasmin, the kids discovered the joy of swimming with Honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles). These docile creatures enjoy swimming, eating and sunning themselves at Pupakea Beach. The size of a small adult, these turtles are amazing to see and the kids just loved being in the water with them. Kendall, Nathan, Viktoria and Jacob each brought snorkel gear as well as goggles and spent several hours just floating on top of the sea green water watching these huge creatures swim below and next to them. It was fun to see how the turtles interacted with each other, not even noticing the kids. They would play tag, shove each other and nip at each other’s tails. Kendall became our adventurer, wanting to swim further and further out to see just what else he could find and then would come and report all the details: a parrot fish, a trumpet fish, a small shark. He was in heaven. Nathan, liked to play it a little more safe. He would snorkel for a little bit, then head back to the sand to dig and bury himself. Jacob thought it was awesome that one got close enough to him that the fin of the turtle touched his belly as it swam by. And Viktoria loved it all. She wanted to snorkel, swim, collect sea coral that had been washed ashore and dig in the sand. This will be a day that the kids will be able to look back on in years to come and remember the simple joy brought to them by one of God’s creatures.
